Principal Investigators:

Cheri Van Patten (BC Cancer Agency) and Kristin Campbell

Purpose:

The purpose of the study is to offer women with breast cancer (and being treated with chemotherapy) a supervised exercise program and educational sessions on healthy eating as part of their supportive care during cancer treatment and measure the adoption, adherence and satisfaction with the intervention as well as its health effects; and an evaluation of long-term health behaviours and optional anthropometrics.

You are eligible to participate in this study if you are:

  • Female;
  • Aged 19 years or older;
  • Have newly diagnosed breast cancer (Stage 1-IIIA)
  • Will be receiving chemotherapy
  • Have a good understanding of English for study instructions and questionnaires.

You cannot participate if any of the following describe you:

  • Have any reasons why you cannot enter into an exercise program (such as known heart disease, uncontrolled diabetes, issues with your muscles or joints that prevent you from exercising, or other similar reasons);
  • Have issues with mobility that requires the use of mobility aids
  • Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40 (determined by the study team)
  • Have metastatic disease (meaning your cancer has spread to other parts of your body)
  • Are receiving neo-adjuvant chemotherapy treatment (meaning chemotherapy prior to any other treatment such as surgery).

If you are eligible to participate, the study involves:

  • Attending an exercise facility for supervised exercise sessions for 1 – 3 times a week, depending on your treatment stage.
  • Attending monthly group-based nutrition education sessions
  • Completing a set of questionnaires, online diet reports, and optional blood draws and exercise assessments at four different time points over two years.
