Student Project Leader:

Amy Kirkham, PhD Candidate

Purpose:

Women with breast cancer may choose to exercise on their own or in close proximity to receipt of their chemotherapy treatments. This study will investigate the effect of a single bout of aerobic exercise 24 hours prior to chemotherapy treatments. Participants scheduled to receive chemotherapy for breast cancer will be randomized to exercise or no exercise 24 hours prior to every chemotherapy treatment. The effect on cardiac function will be compared between groups noninvasively by echocardiography and a venous blood draw at baseline before chemotherapy, after the first treatment and at the end of chemotherapy.

You are eligible to participate in this study if you are:

  • Diagnosed with early breast cancer (stage I-III)
  • Scheduled and not yet started a chemotherapy protocol including adriamycin (a.k.a doxorubicin)
  • Age 18 or older
